Retail Store Tours Celebrates Pelé: The King of FIFA World Cups

Pelé is the only player in history to win three FIFA World Cups. In 1999, the International Olympic Committee name Pelé the Athlete of the Century.

Pelé (full name Edson Arantes do Nascimento) is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers in history. His skill, scoring ability, and global influence helped turn football into the world’s most popular sport. Pelé’s talent contributed to the success of soccer worldwide.

The 1970 World Cup was the first to be watched live by a global television audience. It was also the first to be broadcast in color, and in the brilliant Mexican sunshine, the gold shirts and cobalt blue shorts of Brazil dazzled the watching world. They won the tournament for the third time – beating Italy 4-1 in the final – by playing football of such imagination and thrilling execution that it is regarded as one of the high-water marks in the history of sport.

Pelé grew up in poverty and learned football from his father, Dondinho, a former professional player. As a child, Pelé often played with a ball made of socks or paper because his family couldn’t afford a real one.

Pelé made his debut at age fifteen with Santos FC in 1956. He became a global superstar after the 1958 FIFA World Cup, where at age seventeen he scored six goals and helped Brazil’s national football team win the tournament. Pelé won three World Cups with Brazil: in 1958, 1962, and 1970. He played most of his career with Santos FC, winning multiple league titles and international trophies. He played in the United States with the New York Cosmos, helping popularize soccer in North America. Pelé had over one thousand career goals. He was named FIFA Player of the Century jointly with Diego Maradona by the FIFA. Pelé was known for exceptional dribbling, creativity, and scoring ability.

Pelé transformed football into a global spectacle and inspired generations of players, including Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Eusébio da Silva Ferreira.

Experience the world of Pelé at Pelé Soccer, located in Times Square at 1560 Broadway, New York City.
