Innovation Award for Ken Murphy, Chief Executive Officer, Tesco

The World Retail Forum has selected Tesco as its winner for the 2026 Global Innovation Leadership Awards. The awards recognize companies that demonstrate openness to new ideas, leadership, business process, and superior ranking based on the Intelligent Engagement Index.

Innovation Award for Ken Murphy, Chief Executive Officer, Tesco
Ken Murphy joined Tesco in October 2020 during the peak impact of COVID-19. The key factor that distinguishes Ken Murphy in our opinion is his openness to new ideas inside and outside of Tesco. Sam Walton famously said, “There is only one boss. The customer. And he can fire everybody in the company from the chairman on down, simply by spending his money somewhere else.” In a marketplace where the economy, supply chain, consumer confidence, and rapidly changing behaviors driven by technology are impacting the customer journey, Ken Murphy has his finger on the pulse of the marketplace and consumers.

About the Innovation Leadership Awards
The award started during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it was essential for businesses around the world to take urgent action to survive. The pandemic pushed companies to unprecedented levels of innovation, execution, and teamwork. Presented by the World Retail Forum, the Innovation Leadership Awards celebrate those companies that best exemplify the spirit of “learning together to recover stronger.” The winners are chosen based on an analysis guided by the practices of highly successful retailers that make up the Consumer Engagement Index developed by Retail Store Tours. These are the human touch, the use of technology, shopper safety, store design, brand story, employee training, the ability to change quickly, and a unique value proposition.

About the World Retail Forum
The World Retail Forum (worldretailforum.com) was founded in January 2020 in response to the urgent need for real-time information relating to management of the COVID-19 pandemic. Its goal has been to report on best practices so that companies can “learn together to recover stronger.” The World Retail Forum created “On the Frontline,” a thirty-minute live global news broadcast aired semimonthly, to help executives stay abreast of the latest developments. The program uses case studies to highlight key trends, new technologies, and changing business models. All “On the Frontline” programs can be accessed at no charge on the World Retail Forum website.
