Consumers in Motion Group and the Disney Institute: The Power of Imagination and Innovation
Consumers in Motion Group visited the Disney Institute to explore opportunities for retail and CPG executives worldwide. Consumers in Motion Group selected the Disney Institute less because it teaches store layout and more because it puts a complete operating system on the floor and lets you walk it.
The programs combine classroom work with guided field experiences inside the parks and resorts, which function as a living laboratory of guest flow, merchandise, service, and recovery. Disney Institute’s own framing is not “become Disney.” Facilitators encourage groups to adapt the principles to their own brand.
The Consumers in Motion Group and Disney Institute field experience is built to explain the system behind what you see.
The floor is a designed journey, not a product display. Participants are walked through how people, place, and process shape the guest path from the first step inside.
Service is a standard, not a personality trait. The quality-service curriculum centers on what Disney calls guestology: studying who the customer is and what they expect, then building standards and delivery systems around that. For a retailer, it helps explain why two stores with the same assortment can produce different levels of conversion and attachment.
The cast is the delivery system. Disney Institute facilitators, including in sessions run for retailer groups, stress that the environment cannot be created by an executive memo. The experience depends on the people who deliver it and the systems that support them.
Loyalty is designed around exceed-and-return, not points. Multi-day loyalty work looks at how brand, product, and relationship combine, and how exceeding an expectation creates a reason for customers to come back and spend more.
